How to Make Pom Poms with a Fork Tutorial
Making small pom poms with a fork is a great alternative to making them with cardboard or a pom pom maker. It is the best method to make small yarn pom poms as it is fast and far less fiddly.
Mini Pom Poms with a Fork Method - Supplies
- FORK - Just your regular dinner fork will do. If you want to make really small pom poms you could use a small cake fork. Larger pom poms can be made with a salad or serving fork. The diameter of your pom-poms will be approximately the width of the fork prongs.
- YARN - I used 8 ply (DK) thickness and found this made really fluffy mini pom-poms. You could use a thinner yarn but don't go much thicker as it will be hard to tie the center piece.
- SHARP SCISSORS
I think that must be the shortest supply list ever!

How to Make Pom Poms with a Fork - Step by Step Instructions
Step 1 - Wrap the Yarn Around the Fork in Loops
Start by taking your fork and placing the end of the yarn across the center. Hold it in place and start to wrap the yarn around the prongs of the fork. Just take care to keep the yarn in the center so it doesn't slip off the top of the prongs or cover the bottom of the prongs.
Keep wrapping yarn around the fork prongs until it has a nice thickness. The more yarn wraps the fluffier your pompom.
For my 8 ply (DK) yarn I wrapped it around 40-50 times. If you need multiple pompoms with a fork of the same size, count the number of times you wrap the loops of yarn.
Step 2 - Knot the Center
Cut a piece of yarn 6 inches (15cm) long. You can use a longer piece of yarn if you wish.
Thread it through the bottom of the middle prongs of the fork. Wrap it up and around and then wrap it again, pulling really tight. Wrapping it around the center twice will allow you to get a nice and tight center.
Tie a double knot. Make sure you have a really tight knot so that the pieces don't pull out later.
If you want to use the ties to sew your mini pom pom to something then leave these tails long. Otherwise, you can cut the tails shorter.
Step 3 - Remove the Fork Pom Poms
Pull the yarn off the fork and cut the looped ends. You will need a pair of sharp scissors to cut the little loops cleanly.
Give your mini pom pom a haircut and it is all ready for some fun pom pom crafts. You can fluff it up further by rolling it around your palms.
How to Make Pom Poms with a Fork - In Conclusion
